What Is Quartz Glass Made Of

Quartz glass is a material that’s not necessarily made out of quartz, per se. It’s made from highly durable crystalline material that’s comprised of oxygen and silicon atoms. So, it’s not just a type of quartz material that’s shaped to be a tube.

Its primary composition would be of natural quartz and synthetic silica. This then undergoes a complex process

How To Cut Quartz Glass Tube?

Quartz glass is known for its ability to be shaped in many different forms and ways. And in case you weren’t aware, quartz glass can be cut into squares or tubes. But how achievable is it? How can you cut and shape quartz glass into a tube?

Here’s a simple, but extremely effective and efficient way to do it:

P.S. We’ve already broken it down into the simplest and easiest way to understand it. Whether or not you’re familiar with some of the terms, we made sure to break it down to you as easy as possible!

Step 1: Gather All Materials

The first step is to make sure that you have all the materials you’ll need. These are:

  • Quartz glass tube
  • Glass cutter or diamond saw
  • Fine sandpaper or diamond file
  • Safety goggles, gloves, and mask

Step 2: Ensure Safety and Security

Then, what you’ll want to do next is ensure that you are safe. You’re going to be cutting hard material, this can be extremely dangerous if not done accordingly and correctly.

So, put on your safety goggles, gloves, and mask. Then, ensure that you are working in a well-ventilated area and that no other people are close to the machine.

Step 3: Mark the Cut

When you’re geared up and safe, the next big thing is to mark the cut. Marking is different from scoring as marking only guides the positioning of where the cut will be.

Using a marker or a pencil, draw a straight line at the area where you want to cut it. Make sure that the line is straight and is not wiggled or ruined.

Step 4: Score the Tube

Now, this is where the scoring happens. Scoring, in case you didn’t know, is a practice where you would create a groove or a mark on an object to guide you with cutting. Often done with glass, it helps guarantee that the cut is straight and clean.

Using a glass cutter, score the tube along the marked line. Ensure that you do it with firm and even pressure to avoid accidentally cutting it.

NOTE: You can also use a diamond saw to carefully cut along the marked line. Just ensure that you don’t cut it all the way through!

Optional Step: Apply Heat

What many manufactures do is gently heat the scored line with a butane torch. They do this while rotating the tube slowly to distribute heat evenly. What this does is soften the score on the tube, making it easier and more convenient to cut.

Step 5: Cut Through the Tube!

This is it! Cut the quartz glass tube! To do this, gently apply pressure on both sides of the scored line. Don’t be shocked, but it will snap the tube instantly! Use a glass cutter for this to avoid you being scratched or wounded.

Alternatively, you can use a saw, complete the cut by following through with the saw.

Step 6: Smoothen the Edges

Then, make sure that the edges are safe to be handled or touched. Use fine sandpaper or a diamond file to smoothen the edges out.

That’s it! That is how you cut a quartz glass tube! It might seem an easy task, but it’s actually complex! Make sure that you follow these steps carefully to avoid accidental damage to your glass tubes!

Take note, though, that this process is merely the structural way of doing it. Some manufacturers approach the process differently, so, be sure to check their processes out first before ruling one out!

What is a High Temperature Quartz Tube?

Quartz glass, per se, can already resist high temperatures. But have you ever heard of high-temperature quartz tubes? In case you haven’t heard of that yet, high-temperature quartz tubes are symmetrical quartz glass tubes that have high contents of silicon dioxide.

They’re specifically designed to withstand extreme temperatures, typically up to 1,100 degrees Celsius (2, 012 degrees Fahrenheit). Along with its temperature resistance, they’re also highly durable and can resist the usual wear and tear.

What Makes Quartz Glass so Special?

If you thought that quartz glass and regular glass go together, you’re wrong. There are a lot of quartz glass manufacturers that don’t market their products right simply because they don’t know what it is.

In the most basic and simplest sense, quartz glass is a type of material that’s resistant to strong acids and oxidation.

Quartz Glass vs. Regular Glass

Comparing quartz glass from regular glass might seem to be a complex task. But, we made it easy and simple for you so you can weed the different options out!

Quartz Glass

Ideal for high-tech and demanding applications requiring exceptional temperature resistance, chemical inertness, and optical clarity. However, it comes at a higher cost and is generally used in specialized fields.

Regular Glass

Suitable for everyday applications where cost efficiency is crucial and the conditions are less demanding. It offers good optical clarity for visible light and sufficient durability for regular use, making it the go-to material for general purposes.

Quartz Glass Properties

Quartz glass is part of the most popular types of glass in the market solely because of its properties. So, for you to know what its properties are, let’s briefly discuss them!

  • High Temperature Resistance: Can handle super high temperatures, up to 1100°C (2012°F), without melting.
  • Low Thermal Expansion: Doesn’t crack or break easily with rapid temperature changes because it expands very little.
  • Great Optical Clarity: Crystal clear and lets light pass through perfectly, from UV to infrared.
  • Chemical Resistance: Stands up to most chemicals, so it doesn’t get damaged in harsh environments.
  • Hard and Durable: It’s really hard (like a 7 on the Mohs scale), so it resists scratches and stays tough.
  • Excellent Insulator: Doesn’t conduct electricity, making it great for high-voltage or electronic uses.
  • UV Stability: Doesn’t get discolored or break down when exposed to UV light for long periods.
  • Weather Resistant: Holds up well in bad weather, keeping its properties intact over time.

What is a Glass U Tube Used For?

Glass “U’ tubes is a kind of laboratory apparatus that is purposely for hosting and carrying out chemical reactions. Both ends of U-tubes are for passageway of gas that can have negative chemical reactions if not handled correctly.

Some industries use this as a type of observatory glass, more so like how labs use it.

NOTE: Among its uses are for the study of liquids, gases, atmospheric pressures, vacuums, etc.

Frosted Quartz Glass Tube

If you’re knowledgeable in glass, you would know what a frosted quartz glass tube is. In case you’re not, then what you imagine it to be is what it is exactly. It is a high-purity quartz tube with a frosted or matte finish on its surface. This is done through a series of polishing techniques, such as sandblasting, acid etching, or mechanical abrasion.

The frosted treatment on the surface diffuses light passing through the tube, resulting in a softer, more uniform light output and reducing glare. Moreover, the capacity to block out light sources or internal objects, good light diffusion, and an opaque look are some of the key features of frosted quartz glass tubes. They are perfect for use in lighting, industrial and laboratory equipment, optical instruments, and medical devices because they maintain durability, chemical inertness, and tolerance to high temperatures of clear quartz.

Quartz Glass Tube Price

Quartz glass tubes range greatly in price depending on size, quality, and polishings/treatments. The ordinary clear variant may cost anywhere from $5 to $20 per foot for smaller tubes. These typically have a diameter of 5 to 20 mm.

You should prepare to spend an additional $10 to $30 per foot if you’re looking for a frosted or customized tube.

When it comes to medium-sized tubes, around 20-50 mm in diameter, the price of clear quartz increases to $15 to $50 per foot. In this size range, frosted or specially treated tubes might cost anything from $25 to $70 per foot.

Furthermore, the price range for those incredibly huge tubes—those with a diameter of more than 50 mm—is between $40 and more than $100.
